GTA 6 Early-Game Money: Best First Moves
What we actually know about starting cash and early jobs in GTA 6, plus what history from GTA 5 suggests about the opening hours.
GTA 6 has not launched, and Rockstar has not published a walkthrough of the opening hours. This page separates the handful of things Rockstar has actually shown about the early game from what we are inferring off the last three mainline entries — clearly marked as inference, not fact.
What Rockstar has actually shown about the opening
The August 27, 2026 gameplay reveal — Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a 26-minute video captured from in-game PlayStation 5 footage and published on Rockstar's own YouTube channel and the official GTA VI site — is the single largest piece of real material anyone has to work with. It establishes that the story opens with Lucia's release from a Leonida penitentiary and her reunion with Jason, and it shows both characters as broke, small-time criminals rather than established players in Vice City's underworld. Rockstar's own character bios describe Jason as an ex-military drug runner and Lucia as a fighter recently out of prison — neither reads as a character who starts the game flush with cash.
Earlier trailer footage also shows the pair involved in what looks like a robbery that goes wrong, consistent with a story that opens low and builds up rather than one that hands the player a fortune early. None of this is a confirmed mission list, a confirmed starting cash balance, or a confirmed tutorial structure — it is not a spec sheet, just what the published footage depicts.
What has only leaked, not been shown by Rockstar
Unauthorized gameplay footage from the "CyberLeek" leaks that circulated before the official reveal reportedly showed a more granular robbery system — choosing who to rob inside a diner, managing witnesses, and a scanning mechanic for marking valuables. Rockstar never published this material itself and has publicly called the leaks damaging to how it wanted players to first see the game. Leaked builds can also be outdated or reworked before launch. Treat any of that detail as unverified rumor, not as something you can plan a strategy around.
What GTA 5's history suggests, labelled as inference
Every mainline GTA game since San Andreas has opened its protagonist with little to no money, and the early hours have historically leaned on small, low-stakes jobs rather than the game's biggest earners. In GTA 5, Franklin's opening missions were repossession jobs, not heists — cheap to fail, quick to repeat, and available before the player has built any capital. If GTA 6 follows that same pattern, the equivalent early jobs would be similarly low-commitment work rather than anything resembling a full heist crew.
We model that expectation on this site as Courier Contract Chain and Teardown Parts Grind — the two lowest-setup-cost entries in our ranked money methods table, both under a $1,000 modelled setup cost. That table also carries the honest caveat this whole site repeats: every figure on it is a pre-launch estimate modelled on comparable systems, not a number pulled from the game.
A reasonable approach until the game is out
Given the above, the safest early-game plan is not a set of specific missions — nobody can responsibly hand you those yet — but a general posture: expect to start with next to nothing, expect the first jobs to be cheap and forgiving rather than lucrative, and hold off on any high-setup-cost method until you have played enough of the story to know what capital you actually have. Once you are past the opening hours and have a small cushion, our money methods overview and the ranked table on the seed guide are the place to compare options by modelled dollars per hour rather than by sticker price.
If you are tempted by anything that promises a fast shortcut instead — a "money glitch," a menu trick, a downloadable tool — read our honest look at money glitches and cheats first. Every version of that shortcut in this franchise's history has carried real account risk, and GTA 6 is very unlikely to be an exception.
